October Wellness: Awareness and Action this Month

As autumn sets in, October brings an important focus on long-term health, life-changing conversations, and the strength found in shared experiences. This month, we raise awareness around breast cancer, support smoke-free goals, prioritise mental wellbeing, and open vital dialogue around menopause.

This September, we’re celebrating the strength that keeps us going — in body and in mind. Whether it’s through movement, meaningful conversations, or simply checking in on ourselves and others, taking small, consistent steps can make a lasting impact. Join us as we explore the role of early action, connection, and care in shaping healthier lives – at work, at home, and everywhere in between.

Breast Cancer Awareness Month

Breast cancer is the most common cancer in the UK, with one in seven women diagnosed during their lifetime, early detection saves lives, making awareness and education in the workplace is essential.

This month:

  • Encourage regular self-checks and clinical screenings
  • Share resources on the signs and symptoms of breast cancer
  • Support colleagues affected by cancer, past or present

Consider a pink-themed dress day or a fundraising initiative, and help spread the message: early detection matters.

October is also STOPTOBER, this is the nationwide campaign that encourages smokers to quit for 28 days – making them 5 times more likely to quit for good. Smoking is a leading cause of preventable illness, and supporting your team to stop can lead to real, long-term health benefits. You can help your team by promoting free NHS quit support and stop smoking services, access to smoking cessation programmes or creating a smoke-free culture that’s positive, non-judgemental, and supportive.

Small steps lead to big change: Stoptober is the perfect time to take that first step together.

World Mental Health Day on the 10th is a reminder to build workplaces where people feel safe, supported, and heard. This year’s theme highlights that mental health is a universal human right.

You might consider hosting a mental health check-in, sharing practical resources for managing stress and anxiety, or simply reminding staff about available psychological support, such as counselling or therapy. Sometimes, knowing help is available makes all the difference.

Menopause is a natural life stage, yet it remains one of the least talked about workplace issues. Around 13 million women in the UK are either peri- or post-menopausal, many of them still in the workforce. Menopause Awareness Day on the 18th, try raising awareness by educating teams on menopause symptoms and how they can affect work, and try creating safe spaces where people can talk openly and without stigma.

A menopause-friendly workplace is an inclusive workplace, and supporting people through every life stage builds stronger, healthier teams.
