Health surveillance

As an employer, you have a legal obligation to ensure you don’t put your employee’s health at risk, and to make reasonable adjustments under the Equality Act 2010. This means that working for you and the requirements of the role must not make any pre-existing health conditions worse or aggravate symptoms.

After a New Worker Health Assessment upon appointment, our ongoing health surveillance can help keep everyone safe throughout the employment – keeping check on pre-existing conditions and spotting any new ones.

It’s a sensible precaution to use our health surveillance service to protect yourself, and your employees. It’s a cost-effective way of meeting health and safety legislation and supports the wellbeing of your employees.

The service can be delivered onsite or at a local clinic near you. We can provide a ‘recall’ service where appropriate and provide management information to employers so you can screen workers within the recommended intervals and before fitness certifications expire.

How does this differ from the New Employee Screening service?

Pre-placement assessments focus on assessing an individual’s fitness for a specific job before they start, while health surveillance is an ongoing process that monitors employees’ health during their employment to ensure they are not adversely affected by workplace exposures. Both are vital components of occupational health management, aimed at safeguarding the well-being of employees in their work environments.

How often do I need to repeat screening?

At Sugarman, we understand that the frequency of repeat screening depends on various factors unique to job role, industry, and exposure risks.

Our approach begins with a comprehensive needs assessment, where we evaluate your workplace conditions, the substances you may be exposed to, and the potential health effects. This assessment serves as the foundation for determining how often you should undergo repeat screening.

As a dedicated Occupational Health provider, Sugarman’s expert team ensures that your repeat screening schedule is tailored precisely to your needs. Whether you’re exposed to specific substances, noise, or other hazards, we factor in industry regulations and best practices to create a health surveillance plan.

Is this an ongoing service, or a one off?

Health surveillance is an ongoing service rather than a one-off event. It involves regular and systematic monitoring of employees’ health throughout their employment tenure, especially when they are exposed to specific workplace hazards, substances, or activities that could potentially impact their health over time. The goal of health surveillance is to detect early signs of work-related ill health and ensure that the measures in place to protect employees’ health are effective.
